Opening of applications for participation in the online hackathon of the EMERCOM of Russia on the prevention of emergencies

EMERCOM of Russia initiates the search for innovative solutions for the timely identification of probable places of occurrence of natural and man-made emergencies, as well as prompt response to them.

From 28 to 30 May this year, an open online competition in the field of artificial intelligence will be held with the assistance of the Research Data Infrastructure project. Applications for participation are accepted from April 19 to May 24 inclusive on the website https://emergencydatahack.ru/. Participants in the competition are data scientists, analysts and machine learning specialists.

There are three tasks to be solved during the hackathon.

During the first task, it will be necessary to build a model for the development of the situation, which will allow for 10 days in advance to assess the likelihood of the Lena River opening up and the occurrence of a blockage in its section during a flood-prone period.

In the course of the second task, specialists must build a predictive model that will allow to estimate the water level (including the maximum) at the gauging stations during the flood-hazardous period on the Lena River for 30 days in advance.

In the third task, Participants will develop a machine learning model that allows determining the likelihood of an accident in the context of the time interval, the segment of the road and the number of potential victims.

To assist in the development of solutions, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia will provide IT specialists with access to some of their own data, which was formed during the analysis of emergency situations. On their basis, the participants will build their own ML-models necessary for solving the problems of the department. The best solutions will be implemented.

“Today it is very important to look for new solutions to minimize damage from emergencies and protect the population. The participants of the hackathon will offer their own tools and recommendations for solving urgent tasks of the EMERCOM of Russia. Modern technologies will make it possible to obtain more accurate forecasts and reveal correlations between various scenarios for the development of the situation,” Deputy Minister Victor Nichiporchuk said.

In 2019 and 2020, the Ministry held a series of hackathons related to the tasks of preventing landscape fires and floods. The results obtained are actively used in practice.
