On August 16, during a working trip to the Khabarovsk Territory, the Minister of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia Alexander Kurenkov jointly with the Governor of the region Mikhail Degtyarev, assessed the work on the construction of a flood protection structure in the Southern District of the capital of the administration entity. The work continues on the installation of slabs, parapets, and ramp devices at the dam, which is completed more than 80%. The pontoon-batoport is ready: it will ensure the blocking of the flow of water into the backwater and protect the territory of the residential sector and economic facilities from flooding during the passage of the flood.

The Head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry took part in the coordination meeting with representatives of various departments. At the meeting, it was reported on the current forest fire and flood situation in the region.

This year, 532 forest fires have been identified, no cases of dry vegetation transition and threats to settlements have been registered. A grouping of forces and means of the RSChS (the Unified State System of Prevention and Elimination of Emergency Situations) is ready to respond emergencies. The RSChS involves over 8 thousand people and more than 1.3 thousand units of equipment. “The situation with natural fires was assessed as tense in the Khabarovsk Territory this season. The area of active fires was more than 3 times larger than the total area of forest fires in the entire past year. The situation was missed precisely because of the insufficiently effective work of regional forest fire formations. Now, according to our data, all fires have been eliminated,” Alexander Kurenkov said.

There is a risk of flooding in 110 settlements. A group of more than 5.5 thousand people, 1.6 thousand units of equipment including more than 200 watercraft is involved. The displacement of the next crest of the flood is on the control from the upper reaches of the Amur. The probability of a rise in the water level of the river near Khabarovsk remains due to the precipitation in neighboring regions. 22 settlements may be in the zone of possible flooding.

As Alexander Kurenkov emphasized, thanks to the measures taken in advance, significant flooding of settlements in the spring-summer period was not allowed. “But, as we know, due to the climatic features of the region, the risk of rain floods takes place in August and September every year. Therefore, we must be prepared for a possible sharp rise in water in the rivers. Now it is especially important to complete the planned preventive measures in a timely manner - bank protection, clearing riverbeds and dredging. This will minimize the extent of possible damage from floods, as well as save the lives and health of people,” the Head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry instructed.

During the working meeting, the Governor of the Territory thanked the Minister of EMERCOM of Russia for effective interaction and assistance to the administration entity. In a tense situation, the Russian Emergencies Ministry sent two Mi-8 helicopters, 30 specialists were on duty in three settlements, and the involvement of funds and forces from the Khabarovsk Air Rescue Center assisted to the parachute forest fire service. The parties also discussed issues of providing units with equipment, including unmanned vehicles.
